The Colts acquired an All-Pro cornerback at the trade deadline.
Colts traded for All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner.
The NFL trade deadline has officially ended. Some teams strategically made moves to strengthen their rosters, while others sold their rosters to the highest bidder. The Indianapolis Colts, among them, executed a trade to bolster their roster. In exchange for two first-round picks (2026 and 2027) and wide receiver AD Mitchell, they acquired two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. This blockbuster deal sent shockwaves through the NFL for two reasons: first, the trade compensation the Jets received was substantial. Second, it was surprising that a player of Gardner’s caliber was available for trade.
With Sauce Gardner, the Colts have acquired an elite cornerback renowned for his exceptional shutdown coverage skills. His press technique and ability to maintain focus on receivers downfield are particularly noteworthy. Gardner employs a combination of physical prowess and football IQ to neutralize the opponent’s best receiver, resulting in reduced targeting from opponents. He has a unique play style; using his long arms, hand movements, excellent footwork, and the ability to stay in phase with the receivers. This is evident from his high rates of forcing tight windows and low completion percentage allowed when targeted.
After the trade was finalized, it was reported that Gardner’s extension will take effect after his current rookie deal and fifth-year option expire. His projected cap hits for 2026, 2027, and 2028 are reasonable amounts of $9.5 million, $20.9 million, and $26.2 million. Since Gardner is currently on a rookie deal for the remainder of 2025, the Colts will pay him $625,000. This acquisition provides the Colts with some cap flexibility before his cap hit increases.
