After naming quarterback Daniel Jones the starting quarterback for the 2025 season, many wondered if it was a sign that the team was giving up on quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. after they used a fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
Since being drafted, Richardson has only played a total of 15 games, resulting in a career completion percentage of 50.6%. Last season, he achieved a completion rate of 47.7% and was benched for two games due to his performance.
During Wednesday’s press conference, General Manager Chris Ballard hinted at the team’s decision not to trade 23-year old Richardson. Ballard stated that they are not giving up on the young play-caller, despite Richardson having his best training camp. Ballard remarks about Richardson, saying, “It’s easy to say, ‘Okay, he’s done.” However, he doesn’t agree with that because he doesn’t believe he’s finished yet. He acknowledged the challenges and obstacles Richardson faced and expressed how proud he was of him.
Richardson has the chance to sit behind Jones and grow as a player without the added pressure of being the starter. Despite facing numerous challenges, Richardson has consistently shown professionalism, even without the chance to display his offseason work. We’ll see if this translates into on-field performance when he gets another chance to start in a Colts uniform.
