Indianapolis Colts General Manager Chris Ballard is entering the final year of his contract, and he made it clear that he isn’t interested in discussing a contract extension before the 2026 season.
While speaking with reporters during training camp, Ballard was asked whether he expected to sign an extension before his current deal expires. His answer was straightforward.
“No. I wouldn’t do one.”
When asked why he wouldn’t consider an extension, Ballard responded:
“We need to win.”
Those comments make it clear where Ballard’s focus is heading into the 2026 season. Rather than discussing his future with the organization, he believes the team’s performance on the field should determine what happens next.
It’s a telling response from a general manager who understands the importance of the upcoming season not only for the Colts but for his own future with the franchise.
Ballard has led the Colts’ front office since 2017. During his tenure, Indianapolis has compiled a 62-69-1 regular season record, reached the playoffs just twice, won one playoff game, and has yet to capture an AFC South title. Despite investing heavily in the roster and earning praise for several draft classes, the team has struggled to produce consistent winning seasons.
The Colts have also gone through multiple head coaches and starting quarterbacks during Ballard’s tenure, highlighting the instability that has prevented the franchise from becoming a consistent contender.
Now, with expectations rising and a roster that many believe is capable of competing, 2026 feels like a make-or-break season for Chris Ballard.
